On the Thresholds of Knowledge: jubilee art exhibition at the King’s House in Lund

Jubilee art exhibition

During Lund University’s 350th anniversary year, the whole of the King’s House will be open to the public for the first time. Starting on 6 September, the art exhibition On the Thresholds of Knowledge will display thirteen works by international and local artists throughout the building.

The 16th century edifice is one of the oldest in Lund and housed the University for many years. Through the centuries, there has been an astronomical observatory here, as well as an anatomical operating theatre. The building is both a starting point for, and an element of, the location-specific exhibition. Now visitors will have the opportunity to discover the building and view the artworks on all the floors.

“The exhibition reflects on questions of what knowledge is, where it is produced, how it is used and who it is for”, says Christian Skovbjerg Jensen, who curated the exhibition together with Patrick Amsellem.

Among the artists exhibiting their work are the Raqs Media Collective from India, which has created completely new location-specific works, extending over several rooms in the building. Some of the projects require visitor participation. French artist Myriam Lefkowitz will take visitors on a walk through Lundagård park with their eyes shut, or on an inner journey surrounded by darkness inside the building. Malaysian artist Heman Chong’s work transfers knowledge in the form of a newly written and hitherto unread text in a meeting with a performer.

Several of the artworks focus on books and language in various ways. Meriç Algün’s work recreates the library that previously occupied the ground floor of the King’s House, using thousands of books from the University Library which have never been lent out. Other works activate the building with subtle interventions, sounds or projections.
