Renting a room through the International Housing Office

Many international students rent a room through the International Housing Office. If you have been offered a room and have moved in, there are some things that are important for you to know:

Rental period

The maximum rental period is until the end of the academic year. If you have a contract for the first rental period (the autumn semester) you will automatically receive information on how to extend the contract for the spring semester. However, if you arrive for the spring semester, you will not be offered an extension for the autumn semester, as the Swedish academic year ends in June.

Rent payments

You will get an invoice sent to your letter box when a rental payment is due. Rent is paid monthly in advance. The invoice is sent in the middle of the month and payment is due on the last week day of that month. The amount payable is the monthly price stated on your contract. However, your final payment will differ from that amount as it is unlikely that your contract period consists only of full months. The currency rates may also have affected the amount paid during the contract period and this will be adjusted on your final invoice.
If your invoice does not reach you for some reason, please contact the International Housing Office immediately, as it is very important that your payment is made on time.

If you wish to make one payment for the entire semester instead of a monthly payment, please contact the International Housing Office to get the correct amount due.

Contracts and sub-letting

You are not allowed to sub-let your room or have other people living with you in the room. The room is only for the person(s) named on the contract. Failure to follow these rules will cause you contract to be cancelled.

Storage

The International Housing Office cannot offer any storage facilities. If you need additional storage for your belongings, please contact a private storage company.

Room changes

Unfortunately, we cannot make any room changes. If you are unhappy with your room, you can cancel the contract with one calendar month’s notice.

Looking for new housing or moving

Finding housing in a small student town like Lund can sometimes be difficult, particularly in the autumn when many new students arrive. Sometimes your best option is to find a temporary solution and to continue looking for other housing options once you have settled and have a better idea of where you would like to live.

There are several accommodation agencies that may be able to help you to find new housing options.

If you applied for a room through the International Housing Office when you arrived but were not successful in getting a room, you can apply again for the next semester. Please contact the International Housing Office. However, new students arriving are given priority over students re-applying for a second semester.
