Health and insurance

Sweden has an excellent healthcare system which you are entitled to use when you are studying here.  There are no vaccination requirements for coming to Sweden, or for travel within the EU. Doctors, nurses and dentists invariably speak English and, in many cases, other languages besides Swedish.

The emergency telephone number in Sweden is 112.

The University has a student health counselling service and also cooperates with a local medical centre, which provides international students with a general health service for medical issues.

EU/EEA citizens

You are entitled to access public medical services if you first register with the social insurance office in your home country. You will be issued with a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). You need to have the card with you when you seek medical attention.

As a Master's student at Lund University you are also covered by a special insurance provided by the Swedish government; Student IN. This insurance includes accident cover, costs for home transport in case of illness or accident, liability cover and legal expenses. The insurance is valid when you are in Sweden, so for travel outside Sweden you will need additional insurance cover which you should get in your home country. Remember to bring a certificate documenting your insurance. Please read the full terms and conditions of Student IN (Pdf 413Kb).

Non-EU/EEA citizens

If you are staying in Sweden for more than one year, and have a valid residence permit to prove this, you are entitled to the same health care as all Swedes. You need to apply for a personal identity number at the Swedish Tax Office (Skatteverket), as soon as you arrive, to be eligible for this. This is only valid for students who are here for 12 months or longer. Students who are staying in Sweden for less than one year are usually covered by reciprocal agreements that Sweden has with some, but not all, countries.

If you are a non-EU/EEA student who is required to pay tuition fees for your studies at Lund University, you are also covered by a special insurance provided by the Swedish government, FAS +. If you are a non-EU/EEA student who is required to pay tuition fees, you are covered by this insurance regardless how long your study period is (if it is less or more than 12 months). This insurance includes accident cover, costs for home transport in case of illness or accident, liability cover, legal expenses and property cover. The insurance is valid when you are in the Schengen area (property cover is only valid in Sweden). For travel outside the Schengen area you will need additional insurance cover which you should get in your home country. Please read the full terms and conditions of FAS+ (Pdf 619Kb).

Exchange students

The Swedish government provides special insurance for exchange students (Student IN) to provide, for example, accident cover, cover for medical expenses (where no other cover exists) and liability cover.
