Centrums roll och funktion har förändrats över tiden under perioder av urbanisering, suburbanisering, desurbanisering och reurbanisering. Transportmedelsutvecklingen och olika stadsplaneringstraditioner har påverkat såväl stadsstrukturen som centrums uppbyggnad. Det övergripande syftet med boken är att belysa hur olika bebyggelse- och trafikmässiga faktorer samverkar och formar centrum och centrumstrukturen i städer. De stadsutvecklingstendenser vi ser idag ger upphov till en mängd frågor kring centrums framtida roll. I boken diskuteras och analyseras olika decentraliserande och centraliserande krafter samt vilka effekter dessa har på centrumstrukturen, centrums roll i staden och uppbyggnaden av transportstrukturen.
