Review of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with Children: A Guide for the Community Practitioner
Author
Summary, in English
Cognitive behavioral therapy with children: A guide for the community practitioner by K. Manassis (see record 2009-01291-000). This book is a clearly written and concise guide for therapists who may have had some exposure to a manualized CBT program for children, but have had little formal training or supervision in CBT. While there is a heavy focus on anxiety and depression, the book is really about how CBT is applied in the real world. Therapists with limited experience of CBT should find the many checklists and modules for assisting anxious and/or depressed children very helpful. The author also provides numerous case examples and anecdotes, as well as references to the evidence base and helpful websites for materials. There are simple, how-to explanations about complicated topics, such as adapting treatment for young people with LD, ASD or serious health problems, and handling reluctant kids/families, which should help guide the novice CBT therapist towards a more nuanced practice.
