Protokollens paratexter

Muḥammad Khalīfah al-Tūnisīys översättning av Sions vises protokoll ur ett paratextuellt perspektiv

Author

  • Robin Vikström

Summary, in English

This thesis is based on a qualitative study of paratexts, or paratextual elements, in Muḥammad Khalīfah al-Tūnisīys translation of the Antisemitic forgery Protocols of the (Learned) Elders of Zion (in translation: al-Khaṭar al-Yahūdīy: Brūtūkūlāt Ḥukamā’ Ṣahyūn ), from 1951. Gérard Genette, and his book Paratexts: Thresholds of Interpretation constitutes the theoretical framework of the study, which aims to clarify how the illocutionary force of the paratext can govern our whole reading of a book.

A selection of the cover, title page, the table of contents, intertitles of the introduction and backside have been translated and carefully analyzed in this study, which proves the interconnectedness of the separate paratextual parts which governs the understanding for the work in general.

The thesis argues that the paratexts (peritexts) in the empirical material are essential for our understanding of the book, and the text which it pre- or succeeds; especially the titles, intertitles and the epigraphs of the book’s cover and title page have a clear explanatory and connotative function for the studied book.
