Author

  • Jonathan Takahashi

Summary, in English

In June the 23, 2016 United Kingdom will hold a referendum on their EU-membership. One of the triggers was the letter that David Cameron sent to Donald Tusk November 10, 2015: “A settlement for the United Kingdom in a reformed Union“.

The purpose of the present thesis is to make a profound analysis of David Cameron’s letter, analyzing the proposals and demands he places on EU. Cameron has four main areas that he has worked for: Economic Governance, Competitiveness, Sovereignty and Immigration.

In the analysis the focus is to analyze the conclusive power of the arguments Cameron has in each of the four main areas where the United Kingdom is seeking a reform. The analysis is presented first with sustainability and relevance of the content. Secondly it is showed in the thesis that Cameron’s ideas and arguments are very close to theoretical reasoning within Liberal Intergovernmentalism and Social Constructivism. Additionally Cameron’s political message is analyzed with help of relevant dichotomies, used as a methodological tool.

Finally a concluding discussion regarding the outcome of the letter is presented, including comments on the four main areas emphasized by Cameron.
