Provenansstudie av detriala zirkoner från ett guldförande alluvium vid Ravlunda skjutfält, Skåne
Author
Summary, in English
2014 the geological survey of Sweden held a competition ”mineraljakten” (the mineral hunt), the purpose of the competition was to engage the public and enhance the public perception of metals and minerals in their daily life. One sample came in to the competition with gold from a placer deposit that was rewarded with the fourth place because of the unusual location in Scania. As there are no known gold deposits in Scania it is of interest to trace the source. This study presents the result of U-Pb dating of zircons which are present in the goldbearing alluvial deposit. From the alluvial deposit, zircons where picked to be U-Pb age dated for provenance studies. Zircons where analyzed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) with cathode luminescence and backscatter electron imaging to be described texturally and act as a basis for further analysis. Laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) was used to date the zircons. This yielded over 200 data points with distinct age grouping at 298±17; 959±12; 1144±5; 1224±8; 1455±7 and 1690±6 Ma. These ages can be linked to the regional geology of Sweden. Even though the dated zircons could be linked to events in Swedish geological history a single source of the placer deposit could not be established.
