The purpose of this essay is to examine how the Catalan independent movement has evolved through the centuries with modernistic thoughts of Nationalism from the 19th century to current day. The essay uses three main methodological tools such as Source criticism, Periodization and Contextualization to get an all-rounded understanding of Catalonia’s history. To fully understand Catalonia’s independent movement the paper highlights some key Catalan personalities and the Catalan movement El modernisme. Furthermore the essay takes a look at the declarative and constitutive theories but also the concept remedial secession to clarify the criteria’s to become a new nation. The conclusion of this study shows that the Catalan independent movement began as a Conservative movement during the 19th century. The movement became a left-winged movement in the 1920s and 1930s. Since the mid-90s, the largest branch of the Catalan independent movement has right-oriented views.
