The Struggle for Purity: Naqshbandi-Haqqani Sufism in London

Author

  • Simon Stjernholm

Summary, in English

This essay investigates one of the Naqshbandi-Haqqani Sufi order's centres in London. Sociological theories on New Social Movements are introduced as a means of understanding the activities of the participants at the Sufi centre. Several topics and activities from the centre are presented, among them meditation rituals, physical training and aspects of the relationship between the order's sheikh and his followers. Most of the material is derived from interviews and observations. An attempt to rethink the role and in particular the study of Sufism in Western Europe concludes the essay.
