This thesis focuses on the circumstances at the glassworks of Kosta during the years 1820-1880. The glassworks founded there in 1742 was but one of many small Swedish rural works. Throughout the period in question, the glassworks can be seen as a small-scale factory with about 80 households directly engaged in industrial production. Like the rest of the glass industry, the glassworks at Kosta developed from the production of glass for a principally local market to that of mass production. I have contextualised the developments at Kosta by applying a perspective where certain societal changes were decisive. I have assumed that the most important process during 1820-1880 was the shift in economy towards capitalism. It was this change in the relations of production that proved crucial at Kosta. The object of the study has been mainly to investigate the relation between wage earners and the formation of group- or class-identity during the early industrial period in order to try to capture the pre-union formation of group identity. The results of the study may be summarised in three main points. First, a study of the changes of the labour process at Kosta sheds new light upon how these changes were carried out. Second, the discussion of paternalism as a concept gives a new view of the rural industrial communities. Thirdly, such a study stresses how social patterns of identity changed with the new organisation of labour.
