Q: Can I choose a family myself?
A: You can write down your specific wishes in the application form. When we match you with a family, we will try to follow your wishes as much as possible but we cannot guarantee a perfect match.
Q: What is a typical Friend Family?
A: The families can be very different, but they are all Swedes. Friend families can be a traditional couple with children, but also singles, pensioners, couples or families with an international background themselves.
Q: Does it cost anything?
A: You do not have to pay any programme fee for getting a Friend Family. If you join your Friend Family to participate in leisure activities, it is possible that you would pay for an entrance fee or other costs for yourself related to the activity. Sometimes your Friend Family might like to invite you, but do not expect this.
Q: Do I have any obligations?
A: If you wish to show your gratitude in some way, your Friend Family will surely appreciate it if you, for example, bring some flowers for the host, prepare dessert when having dinner together or even invite them for dinner at your home.
Q: What language do I speak with my Friend Family?
A: This depends on you and your family. Perhaps your Friend Family is able to speak your mother tongue; perhaps you will speak English with each other. All families will be happy if you try to speak some Swedish. Some families are not very experienced in speaking English and your meeting can be a chance for you and your family to improve your language skills.
Q: What if I do not want to eat meat or if I am allergic to something?
A: Please tell us about allergies or special food preferences in the application form. If you are allergic to pets, we will find a family without pets for you.
Q: Am I allowed to smoke inside the house?
A: Generally it is uncommon in Sweden to smoke inside the house. Never do so without your Friend Family's permission.
Q: What shall I do if my Friend Family acts in a way I do not like?
A: Tell your Friend Family about your worries. Be friendly and try to find a solution together. If this does not work out, please contact us.
Q: Can we be two Friend Students in one family?
A: In general it is possible. Please make a note of this wish in your application form.
Q: Do I have to fulfill some special requirements to be an international Friend Student?
A: The conditions are that you are interested in getting to know a Swedish family and that you are open to other values and lifestyles. Furthermore, you are willing to speak a foreign language and want to show your Friend Family some of your own culture.
Q: Whom do I talk to if any questions or problems arise?
A: Please contact our team at Student Services. See our contact details on this web page.
