Fine and Performing Arts

Our courses combine theoretical studies with practice, so that every student can fully realise his or her potential as an artist, musician or actor. A number of prominent artists, both in Sweden and internationally, have studied at Lund University’s Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts. Nathalie Djurberg, who in 2009 won the silver Lion for her art at the famous Venice Biennale, is just one example.

Applicants undergo a rigorous admissions process. In order to be admitted, both talent and motivation are required. Of the some 1 000 applicants to the Malmö Academy of Theatre each year, only between 10 and 12 are admitted. As a successful candidate you can expect hard work, but also a unique opportunity to do what you are passionate about in a stimulating environment.

Both practice and guidance are necessary for students to develop their artistry. We consider it very important that the lecturers are practising artists, musicians or actors. Independent work is also emphasised and at the Malmö Academy of Art, students have access to their own studio during their studies. After the end of the programme, 90 per cent go on to professional careers as artists.

Participation in the surrounding cultural life is prioritised. Students participate in various public exhibitions, concerts and performances. These are often highly appreciated and well attended, both by local people and other students. The Malmö Academy of Theatre has its own theatre in connection with its premises, the Malmö Academy of Art presents its own exhibitions in its student gallery and the Malmö Academy of Music arranges over 200 concerts a year.

Together the academies also run Inter Arts Centre (IAC), a centre for research and experimentation. The environment at the centre is intended to offer opportunities for interdisciplinary projects between visual art, music and theatre, but also projects in collaboration with artists outside the departments.

All three academies have active networks with international artists, musicians and performers as guest lecturers. You therefore have great opportunities to make valuable contacts for the future.

"My teacher is brilliant, dedicated and very encouraging. Having a good teacher is the only thing that's important for a musician."
