Overview of services offered

The Academic Support Centre is a free service open to all students studying courses and programmes conducted in English at Lund University. We provide individual and group consultations on topics including, but not limited to:

The academic writing process:

• researching
• brainstorming
• pre-writing
• drafting and argument-building
• avoiding plagiarism
• clarifying and cohering
• revising
• editing

Speaking and presentation skills:

• structuring an effective presentation
• using visual aids
• overcoming nervousness
• delivery practise
• pronunciation, phonetics, & prosody

Reading and study skills:

• time management & prioritising
• thinking critically
• reading strategies

Preparing for an appointment - what you need to know

The earlier you set up an appointment, the better. You will have revisions to make to your text or presentation after we meet, and you’ll want plenty of time before the deadline to make them. While we serve students who request one-time only appointments, we strongly encourage you to come early in the writing process and to make multiple follow-up appointments before you turn in your final assignment.

Do you have comments on previous assignments from your professor? Bring them! Comments help us assess your skill set so that you avoid repeating the same mistakes.

Most students request help for a specific assignment, and we ask that you email a copy to the consultant at least 48 hours in advance of your appointment time.

If you don’t have a specific assignment to work on, schedule an appointment to discuss the areas in which you want to improve your English skills, and we will develop a personalised study plan with follow-up appointments to help you advance.

Please note! We aim to equip you with the skills necessary to become better writers and presenters in English, and for this reason we are not a quick-fix editing service.

Making an appointment

Appointments can be made directly with the language consultant, via email: English.support@stu.lu.se.

Students studying at Campus Helsingborg are welcome to travel to Lund for an in-person appointment, but we also offer Skype appointments (with or without the camera) for students located off of the Lund campus.
