Ciência sem Fronteiras - Brazilian scholarship programme

Lund University is Scandinavia's top-ranked, full-scale university and the #1 choice for international students coming to Sweden. We are delighted to participate in Ciência sem Fronteiras and welcome Brazilian students to experience global class environments and exposure to cutting-edge research within an international city where 90% of the population speak fluent English.

Ultrasound, dialysis and Bluetooth technology are all examples of revolutionary discoveries that have their roots in research at Lund University. The business sector in Lund boasts an impressive breadth of knowledge-intensive companies at the forefront in their fields and today ST Ericsson, Tetra Pak, Gambro and Alfa Laval are among the large, well-known companies with which Lund University cooperates.

The city of Lund is located in southern Sweden, which has a warmer winter climate than other parts of Sweden and there are many beautiful beaches close by. Lund is just 10 minutes by train to Malmö (Sweden's 3rd largest city) and 35 minutes by train to Copenhangen in Denmark. See a short video about the city of Lund.

Undergraduate sandwich programmes (taught in English)

Lund University is offering undergraduate sandwich programmes which give approved Brazilian students with Science without Borders scholarships the opportunity to spend one year in Lund, Sweden to study over a period of two semesters (10 months of study). Sandwich programmes in the following subjects are offered by Lund University (all programmes are taught in English). Download programme descriptions in our 2014 Science without Borders catalogue (updated 7 May), PDF 4Mb or refer to the summary list below.

A Brazilian perspective

Jos Alcides Gobbo JuniorJosé Alcides Gobbo Junior, Associate Professor at UNESP and Guest Lecturer at LU's Department of Design Sciences.

"There is a very high quality of research and education at Lund University. Brazilian students coming to Lund University can look forward to meeting people from all over Europe as well as other countries - it is a truly multicultural environment.

For students who really want to study innovation, to gain knowledge and to know what to do with their knowledge, Lund University is a great place - it has an environment that fosters creativity, freedom of speech and people are valued. Sweden itself offers a high social standard of living in a society focused on human values - it is an easier way to study and live."

Cintia UvoCintia Bertacchi Uvo, Professor in Water Resources Engineering, Lund University (originally from São Paulo)

"I encourage Brazilian students to come to Lund University to experience a different way of learning, where the student is always at the centre of the education. You will find there is much more support here in terms of pedagogy - the teachers are very available to help you, the quality and consistency of teachers is always very high and this results in a less stressful learning environment. It’s a new way of thinking - a new way of looking at life and studies.

Studying at Lund University also gives you the chance to experience an international life – you will literally meet students from all over the world and you can easily get by speaking only English. The student life will also appeal to students – there are many student parties and sports facilities as well as Sweden’s unique cultural traditions and beautiful nature.

Summer in Sweden is wonderful - it’s as close as you can get to heaven! Winters are cosy – unlike Brazil, Sweden is prepared for the colder weather and it is always very comfortable inside. One of the main reasons I have continued to stay in Sweden is because it is a country that values equality and fairness. This is reflected throughout society and within the University with a focus on gender equality and the lack of hierarchy. These values have given me the freedom to define what I want to achieve in my career”.

Rodrigo FaermannRodrigo Faermann (studied at Lund University through the Euro-Brazil Window project)

"It was an amazing experience studying five months at Lund University. The city has an excellent vibe and is very hospitable with many international students - that helped me a lot with my adaption to the Swedish culture. I really enjoyed the months I spent in Lund - I met many people of different nationalities and this was one of the best parts of the experience."

Cleber ArrudaCleber Arruda, from Brazil and Belize (studied Geomatics)

“We only study one subject at a time instead of studying several in parallel. This means that we focus very intensively on each subject. I think that is a good thing because it gives you time to really get into the subject and properly understand how it works without any distractions. We don’t have to call the lecturers Sir or Madam, but can just use their first names. This creates such an open atmosphere and it is wonderful. There is a nice mixture of people and cultures here. I was so surprised when I found things from my country here, such as samba and capoeira."
