This course provides an overview of central concepts and theories in leadership research, with emphasis on critical perspectives and the wider organisational and societal context of leadership. The course gives an introduction to basic leadership research notions, such as the distinction between leadership and management, and the history of leadership models concerning leadership treats, behaviours, and situational contingencies. It treats the societal grounds of leadership which provide legitimacy to different combinations of leadership and management roles. It presents important critiques of established notions of leadership, especially heroising accounts of individual leader accomplishments, and reviews alternative approaches that consider aspects such as gender and power, institutional contexts, and the social construction of leadership.
