SASH41. This course deals with the concept of crusades , which is studied and problematised in past and present contexts from the perspective of the theories and methods of religious studies. The main emphasis is on the medieval crusades and the struggle for sacred places in Jerusalem, but other crusades against non-Christian and Christian groups are also studied. Following a general intro¬duction, examples from the Christian, Jewish and Islamic traditions are used to show the differences in historical narratives depending on who writes history and when. The symbolic significance of the crusades in modern popular culture is also discussed in the course. The course includes both lectures and seminars.
