| Abstract English | "In what language would one polyglot praise another? Multilingualism and linguistic patriotism in the light of a letter and a poem from Magnus Gabriel Block to Sophia Elisabeth Brenner." In the late 17th and the early 18th centuries, there was a dialectic relation between the increasing national concern for the native language on one hand, and the international multilingual culture where Latin was still predominant on the other. At this time a Swedish writer of occasional poetry, Mrs. Sophia Elisabeth Brenner (1659-1730), received a poem and a letter from another Swede, Dr. Magnus Gabriel Block (1669-1722). In his poem and letter, Block honours Sophia Brenner for clearly expressing her wish to write poems in her mother tongue. However, he does not stop there. Writing this poem in Latin and his letter in Italian and referring to Mr. Brenner's knowledge of other languages as well, Block recognises and honours her as a member of the international respublica literaria. Even though Mrs. Brenner corresponded with learned men in Latin and other languages, she still proclaimed her concern for the develpment of the native language. Thus, she was able to participate as a femina docta both in the national debate and in the international one, being recognised as such more or less universally. |
