Theodor W. Adorno uttryckte en stor beundran för framför andras Arnold Schönbergs och Anton Weberns lieder. Även om Mahlers vokalmusik och sångproduktion har fått mindre utrymme i Adornos musikkritiska betraktelser än symfonierna utgör de dock ett viktigt moment i hans resonemang om ett musikaliskt ”värde”. Samtidigt som sångerna tolkades i förhållande till Mahlers och andra samtida tonsättares symfoniska kompositioner och dåtida tonsättares sångproduktion använde Adorno sin sångreception till att positionera Mahler i den konstmusikaliska kanon som han själv till dels hade skapat. |
