The course teaches basic principles of optics, and gives practical knowledge on optical design through the use of a modern, commercially available ray tracing program called FRED. The following subjects will be treated: Ray optics (including matrix-formulation), Wave optics, Fourier Optics, Electromagnetic Optics and Polarization. Three laboratory exercises, in groups of only 4 students and a highly qualified supervisor, are included: Interferometry, Fourier Optics, and Light Polarization. The students will also be given a ray tracing project.
