Subject area
Packaging logistics is about how to select and develop the packaging system to support the product and the supply chain all the way from packing until the product reaches the end customer or consumer and how the package is designed to meet customer/consumer demands. The additional handling for recovery of packaging material as well as reuse of the packages is also included. Packaging logistics concerns itself with the interface that the package creates between the product and the handling including design, materials selection, information requirements and information systems, dimensions, standards and modularization.

Research
Research in packaging logistics focuses on packaging and its impact on logistics. The research areas are ranging from applied, industry related research to theoretical and methodological developments for the packaging logistics discipline. The focus is currently on how the package can be used to create an added value and starts with the packaging design process and how it can be integrated with the product development process. In addition environmental issues, e-commerce, customer service are addressed as well as complexity theory for mapping of existing packaging systems, agent based and discrete event modeling and simulation of packaging systems as well as the packaging role in supply chains. Furthermore in order to advance the packaging logistics discipline emphases are put on method developments where different types of modeling and simulation techniques are used.
