Business and innovation
The business sector in Lund boasts an impressive breadth of knowledge - intensive companies at the forefront in their fields. In 2013, two of the "Top 100 Global Innovators" were Swedish companies based in Lund, reflecting the city’s unique, world-class environment for technology, knowledge, innovation and entrepreneurship.
Most of the companies operating at Ideon Science Park, the first of its kind in Sweden, have their origins in research from the University. The world’s fastest growing technology – Bluetooth – came into being at the end of the 1990s at Ericsson, the first company to be based at Ideon. Ericsson, Gambro and Alfa Laval are among the large, well-known companies with which Lund University cooperates.
Innovation activities are an increasingly important aspect of the University’s work. Business developers offer support and resources to those researchers who want to convert their results into commercial products. With the help of the University’s innovation system LUIS, our researchers set up around ten companies every year. Southern Sweden’s regional innovation office, Innovationskontor Syd (IKS), is also based here, which means that Lund University also supports researchers at other higher education institutions in the region.
Many of our collaborations encompass the whole of the Öresund region. A collaboration that has been recognised as Europe’s most successful business network is the Øresund Science Region, which comprises a number of collaboration projects within food, environment, health, design, logistics and IT.
In the early 1980s Sweden’s first research park was founded in Lund – Ideon Science Park. During the 1990s it grew to become one of the most important and successful of its kind in Europe. Today there are more than 250 companies based at Ideon, and of the more than 700 firms that have operated there since the beginning – the majority have had their origins in research at Lund University.
An entire district is now being developed in connection with Ideon, ‘Lund North East’, where the research facilities MAX IV and ESS will be built.
Collaboration with industry
Many of the University’s interdisciplinary study programmes and those based on the needs of industry are offered in close collaboration with the business sector.
At the School of Economics and Management, leading companies such as Sony and Tetra Pak offer financial support to the School’s international efforts and continuous development. Through this close collaboration they gain the opportunity to recruit highly qualified students.
Lund University and Region Skåne cooperate extensively in order to strengthen the development of health care and clinical medical research in the region. Basic research findings are converted into practical healthcare by clinical researchers and, in turn, clinical observations create new challenges for basic research.
Göran Harrysson, Managing Director, AB Tetra Pak
"If we are to establish cooperation with a university, it must be of the highest standard. Lund University is that."
Joakim Nelson, Head of Industry Collaboration, Sony Ericsson Mobile AB
"Our proximity to the University makes it easy to recruit qualified staff and ensure that research is carried out in the areas which interest us and that we can use in our product development."
