When to apply

The academic year

The academic year at Lund University is divided into two semesters (autumn and spring), each lasting 20 weeks. The autumn semester begins in August/September and the spring semester begins in January. The academic year runs from late August/early September through until early June, with summer holidays during June, July and August. The majority of the programmes at Lund commence in the autumn semester.

Application period for degree programmes

Students applying for international Master's degree programmes or Bachelor's degree programmes in English have the following application periods:

  • 17 October – 15 January for studies starting in the autumn semester (August/September). Note that a few programmes do not open for applications until 1 December.
  • 1 June – 15 August for studies starting in the spring semester (January). Note that only a few programmes start in the spring semester each year.

Please note that some students may be eligible to apply during the later "Swedish student application round".

Application period for exchange students

Students from a university that has a formal exchange agreement with Lund University can apply through their home university's international office to be nominated for a student exchange. Only nominated students are given access to apply for exchange studies at Lund University via our online student exchange application system.

For most faculties/subject areas, nominated exchange students apply during:

  • March-April for autumn semester exchange studies
  • September-October for spring semester exchange studies

Please contact your home university's international office for more information on how to come on an exchange to Lund University.

PhD students

There is no specific application period for PhD studies. PhD positions are organised and advertised at the department/faculty level throughout the year. It is common for faculties to advertise upcoming doctoral positions during spring (January-March). Check for doctoral positions from our jobs webpage or contact the faculty you are interested in for details on how to apply for PhD studies.
