As part of a three-day state visit to Sweden, His Excellency Sergio Mattarella, President of Italy, came to Lund University where he gave a lecture to a packed auditorium. The aim of the official visit was to further promote the long-standing and excellent relations between Sweden and Italy.

The three-day official visit included events in Stockholm, Lund and Malmö.

The themes of the visit were digitisation, sustainability and European cooperation focusing on research and culture, something that was reflected in the President’s lecture entitled “Sweden, Italy, Europe: together for the future”. The lecture emphasised the importance of maintaining strong EU cooperation.

He urged the audience to remember our shared history, including two world wars, but also the many positive elements that have led to a society in which knowledge, culture, social justice and an open market are important components.

At the same time, there are many problems and tensions, noticeable not least in the current strain on European cooperation as well as with the outside world, remarked the Italian President, who also emphasised the importance of Europe remaining united in the future.

“To our students: we all have a common responsibility, a responsibility we share with the younger generation, which is the future of Europe. My appeal to you, my hope, is that you will continue to travel, study, get to know the cultures of the places you travel to and their languages, that you learn about their traditions, ways of life and identities, and that you enrich them so that together with your colleagues you can share dreams and aspirations with one another. The culture that has united us continues to do so and makes us all proud to be Europeans”, said Sergio Mattarella.

The event was also attended by His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf and Her Majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden.
