A record number of doctorates were conferred this year, as so often in bright sunshine. The Doctoral Degree Conferment Ceremony is the University’s major academic celebration. In a solemn ceremony in Lund Cathedral, the doctoral students who completed their doctoral studies in the past year and successfully defended their doctoral theses at Lund University had their degrees conferred. At the ceremony, degrees are also conferred on the faculties’ honorary doctors. Doctors who completed their doctoral studies 50 years ago become jubilee doctors.
The ceremony starts with an opening speech by the Vice-Chancellor, followed by the ceremonies of the nine faculties, in which new doctors and honorary doctors are conferred with their doctorates, and doctors whose doctorates were conferred 50 years ago become jubilee doctors. The entire ceremony is conducted in Latin.
The new doctors and honorary doctors receive the insignia: doctor’s hat or laurel wreath, doctor’s ring and diploma. Jubilee doctors receive a new diploma.
Before the conferment ceremony of the Faculty of Philosophy, laurel wreaths are carried in by the wreath bearers who arrive at the Cathedral by horse and carriage.
The ceremony includes a cannon salute, carried out by the Wende Artillery Regiment, as a tribute to the doctors.
