Abstract

Brain-computer interfaces are employed for the neuroprosthetic control of robot arms or of virtual objects, for motor rehabilitation, or to restore communication in individuals with impaired means of expressing themselves. Several companies – the most prominent among them Elon Musk’s Neuralink – are currently working on a novel generation of brain-computer interfaces that integrates large language models, is fully implantable, and will be more effective at decoding thoughts and stimulating the brain.

These new devices have certain characteristics that will likely change society in unprecedented ways. I will give an overview of this visionary technology before discussing ethical and political difficulties that the innovations raise.

Bio: Lukas J. Meier is an Assistant Professor in the Philosophy of AI in Lund University’s Programme for Global Excellence and an Affiliate at the Harvard Medical School Center for Bioethics with main interests in neurophilosophy, artificial intelligence, medical ethics, and philosophy of mind. Previously, he was a Junior Research Fellow at Churchill College, University of Cambridge, a Technology and Human Rights Fellow at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, and a Fellow-in-Residence at the Harvard Center for Ethics. Lukas studied philosophy at the University of Oxford and political science at the University of Göttingen.
