Sociology: Knowledge and Social Change

Course name: SOCN08, Sociology: Knowledge and Social Change (Swedish name: Kunskap och social förändring). Advanced level master course (Second Cycle). 7.5 credits. Autumn semester. Language of instruction: English.
This course is offered as a stand-alone course and is also compulsory within the Master's Programme in Sociology SASCO.
This course explores the nature of knowledge production and its consequences for social change. You will study the production, the spreading, and the consumption of knowledge within various contexts in society, including science, public discourse and debate, and everyday life.
The course covers a wide range of topics, from social and environmental issues to political, economic, ethical, and spiritual questions. You will examine patterns of knowledge production and distribution driven by policy, social movements, popular culture, academia, and the intersection between technology and capitalist entrepreneurs.
You will also investigate the concept of knowledge itself, contrasting it with faith, facts, and conspiracy theories.
Teaching will consist of lectures and seminars, and you will be assessed via an individual take-home exam.

Entry requirements
Admission to the course requires 90 credits in a social sciences subject in sequential courses. English 6.
Selection criteria
English language requirements
Most of Lund University’s programmes require English Level 6 (unless otherwise stated under 'Entry requirements'). This is the equivalent of an overall IELTS score of 6.5 or a TOEFL score of 90.
