What Iván says about the Master's in Information Systems
Introducing Iván
Hi! My name is Iván and I'm the student ambassador for the Master's programme in Information Systems. I am happy to answer any questions you might have about the programme, courses, student life, and life in Lund and Sweden via the Unibuddy Platform, where you can chat with me (see below). Please note that I cannot answer questions about the application process, scholarships, or residence permits.
About the programme and the teaching style
Why did you choose Lund University?
"I chose Lund because I wanted to do my Master's abroad at a prestigious university. Having previously studied in Sweden, which I really enjoyed, I focused my search there when looking for programmes. This Master's in Information Systems was exactly what I was looking for and isn't offered at many universities. Plus, Lund's high reputation, internationalisation and student life made it the perfect choice, so deciding was a no-brainer for me!"
What do you think of your programme so far? Does it meet your expectations?
"So far, the programme has met my expectations. I have a more technical background in Information Systems from my Bachelor's programme and was looking for a Master's that bridge Information Systems with a managerial perspective. What I've learned the first months focuses on leveraging IT from a management view to enhance a company's position, sustainability and innovation."
What is the best thing about your programme?
"I really enjoy being part of such a diverse class, not only internationally but also in academic backgrounds. Due to the nature of the programme, each student may have previous studies on Computer Science, Business Administration, Management, Information Systems, etc. This interdisciplinary mix of skills makes group assignments truly engaging, as each of us brings unique perspectives to the whole group."
What do you think of the teaching style in Sweden?
"The teaching style here is quite different to that in my home country. In Sweden, there's a greater emphasis on large individual and group assignments, with fewer lecture hours and no traditional exams so far in my programme. This might be challenging to some students, as the study is more independent and requires personal accountability. However, it's more flexible and less stressful than what I'm used to."
How international is your programme?
"The programme is really international, with around half of the students being international from all the continents. All the teaching and communication, including the course literature, is in English. Moreover, since Lund is one of the most international universities in the world, no Swedish knowledge is required to live here while studying (although I encourage you to learn some!)."
Why should prospective students choose this programme?
"This programme is suitable not only for those with a Bachelor's in Information Systems but also for students with background in Computer Science or other technical IT fields who want to better understand what these technologies can offer to organisations. It is also ideal for Business and Management students wishing to leverage Information Systems. The Master's has an emphasis on academic writing and Information Systems research, making it a great option for potential PhD students too. The courses and programme syllabus are a great source to know more precisely what the Master's is about."
What are the potential benefits/differences in doing a one-year Master’s programme?
"One of the main benefits of a shorter programme is that it's "easier" to decide to move or study abroad, as the commitment is not as long-term. In my case, I was already working as a software engineer before applying. Choosing a one-year Master's allowed me to further my studies and specialise without creating a big gap in my career, whereas a longer programme would not have been ideal for me. In the end, it is hard to predict what you will be doing in a few years, so did not want to commit too far ahead."
Thoughts on being an international student at Lund, spare time and tips for prospective students
What is it like being an international student at Lund University?
Lund is the most international university in Sweden - and one of the most international in the world. Consequently, there's a large number of international students and cultures here, as well as many activities for us. This makes Lund a very welcoming city and university, with a vibrant student life that doesn't leave international students behind. Actually, I'd say there are too many events in Lund to attend all of them!"
What do you do in your spare time?
"I love the student life in Lund, which is truly special thanks to the student organisations and Nations (social clubs). I am actually a foreman in one of them. There are more than a dozen and are very welcoming places that keep the university campus alive after classes, weekends and long winter evenings. I also enjoy playing football, cycling, hiking and exploring the Skåne region while keeping in touch with my home friends."
Do you have any advice for students that are considering coming to Lund?
"I would encourage future students to search all the offered programmes, as Lund University has a very wide range of them and there might be several similar programmes for the field you're interested in. I'd also recommend to have fun and make the most out of it, since Lund is an outstanding university campus with many sports and activities that you may only enjoy during your student life. And get a bike!"
