Medicinen är ett kunskapsfält med humanistisk förankring. Vid Enheten för medicinens historia är målet att nå ökad förståelse för hur den medicinska vetenskapen tagit form över tid och fördjupad insikt kring det sociala sammanhang medicinen verkar i. Genom sin tillhörighet i ämnesområdet Medicinsk humaniora gränsar verksamheten till flera andra akademiska discipliner, såsom idé- och lärdomshistoria, litteraturvetenskap och etnologi.
