Description
Being one of the most common neurological diseases, epilepsy affect 60 million people worldwide. It is characterized by perennial seizures and it does not discriminate between young and old. In fact the highest risk of onset is among children and elderly.
Until this day there is no cure for epilepsy, the therapies available only treat symptoms and come with severe side effects. In addition, one third of the patients show pharmacoresistence.
In children, and especially in patients with focal cortical dysplasia, these untreated seizures can have serious impact on the developing brain, leading to mental disability.
In order to understand the mechanisms behind the seizures we study this type of epilepsy with the aim to develop new therapeutic strategies specially adapted for children.
