This essay examines the way in which the traditional form and concept of the muqaddima, as developed in the arabic tradition, is employed by lebanese marxist scholar Husayn Mroueh (1910-1987) in his work on the arabic-islamic heritage, al-naza̔āt al-mādiyya fī al-falsafa al-̔arabiyya al-islāmiyya. The theoretical framework for the study is provided by Peter Freimarks study Das Vorwort als literarische Form in der arabischen Literatur, which examines the development of the muqaddima-form in the classical arabic era. Husayn Mrouehs specific Muqaddima is then compared to Freimarks definition of the muqaddima, in terms of topoi and content, as well as to a general conception of the traditional function of the muqaddima, and relationship of muqaddima to the main text.

It is found that Mrouehs Muqaddima to a greate extent conforms to the traditional concept of the muqaddima, in terms of topoi used as well as in terms of function; i e it serves to provide a discursive foundation to the main text. The conclusion is thus that despite the radical and anti-traditionalistic content and aim of Mrouehs endeavour, he employs traditional literary concepts and forms in the structuring of his text.
