Maktrelationen mellan Europeiska unionen och kandidatstaterna på Västra Balkan

Author

  • Teodor Fridén

Summary, in English

The European Union is a union comprised of 28 European member states but its influence stretches past their traditional borders. Through its enlargement mechanism, the EU exports influence and social order to the candidate countries in the form of calls for reform which would bring them closer to the EU, structurally, economically and culturally, with the end goal being membership in the EU. This thesis aims to provide an overview of relations, with a focus on power relations, between the European Union and the candidate countries in the Western Balkans through a combined narrative and discursive analysis of official enlargement strategies from 2014 and 2018 authored by the European Commission. Through the analysis of these documents, the relation between the two parties has been further clarified as mutually beneficial and progressing towards the end goal and the influence of external actors has been mapped in a manner of causality which is influential to EU actions taken in the past four years.
