The Emigrants Makes Its Way into the Classroom. Incorporating Core Values and Literary Teaching into the Swedish Subject in Upper Secondary School
Author
Summary, in English
The purpose of this essay is to explore the ways in which Vilhelm Moberg’s The Emigrants (1949) can be used in education merging the Swedish subject with the contents of the curriculum. This will be achieved through applying a pedagogically aimed textual analysis, which will demonstrate the novel’s didactic potential. Another objective is to show how teachers can use the essay’s findings practically in their teaching.
The analysis was conducted through a close reading of certain passages of the novel, using the following analytical concepts: critical literacy, the male gaze, norm-critical- and intersectional education.
The essay’s findings make it clear that contents of The Emigrants can be connected to chosen themes from the curriculum. Excerpts from the novel showcase norms regarding sexuality and religion, as well as positions of power and inequality, but these are portrayed in ways which are contrary to the values that are established in the upper secondary schools’ curriculum. This shows the novel’s didactic potential, as descriptions which are problematic in today’s society make a constructive foundation for value-oriented literary education. The essay also establishes that, in order for literary projects to maximise the pupils’ development, a combination of discussions and writing assignments should be used.
