LA RÉCEPTION DE LA DISPARITION DE GEORGES PEREC: Un bilan critique sélectif

THE RECEPTION OF LA DISPARITION BY GEORGES PEREC: A selective critical review

Author

  • Viola Duvander

Summary, in English

This thesis is a compilation of the academic reception to La Disparition of Georges Perec, a lipogram. By analysing a width of academic articles concerning La Disparition throughout fields and eras the aim is to describe tendencies in the analytical reception, in the linguistic as well as the literary field. The articles treat many themes, amongst some are the symbolisation of the missing letter E, and the autobiographic relation to the authors own life. Studies on translation are also prevalent. This study also discusses the challenges when analysing a text according to the division between content and form, in this case, in a text as affected by the form as the lipogramatic constraint of language used here. The form speaks of the content and the content speaks of the form.
The main conclusion is that it is indeed restricting, if even impossible, to analyse this text without ever mentioning the form, and thus to be able to follow the classic literary division between form and content.
