La traducción en los medios de communicación: El arte de subtitular para el cine y la televisión
Author
Summary, in English
This thesis begins by briefly discussing translation in general, identifying some of the problems involved in the linguistic activity. Then it seeks to explain what is involved in translation relating to film and television, i.e. subtitling. Finally, a comparison will be made between the Spanish speech in the Mexican film, Como agua para chocolate - directed by Alfonso Arau in 1992 and based on his wife Laura Esquivel's much debated novel (from 1989) – and subtitles in both English and Swedish. The film will be analysed linearly, i.e. scene by scene. In connection with this, the beginning of the first chapter of the original novel will also be compared with its corresponding texts in Swedish and English. The purpose of these comparisons is to be able to show and detect whether the translations into these languages are good or poor. Are there big differences between the original and the translations, or do the translations follow the original text and speech very closely?
