Coming to Sweden and Lund University with a disability

Sweden has a national disability policy to ensure equal opportunities for everybody. If you have any kind of disability and are coming to Sweden and Lund University to study, it is important for you to know how the country and the University can accommodate you. You will also want to find out exactly which types of support are available. Keep in mind that processes and services may differ from what you are used to from your home country.

Studying in Sweden when you have a disability – studyinsweden.se

Below, you can learn more about the various forms of learning support available at Lund University and how to apply for support.

Requirements for support

You can receive learning support if you have a long-term disability. A long-term disability might be, for example, reading and writing difficulties/dyslexia, physical disabilities, hearing and vision impairment, neuropsychiatric disabilities, mental health conditions or chronic illness.

Short-term injury or illness is not covered by learning support. If you need short-term assistance, you should contact your department.

In order to receive support, you must have a certificate stating that your disability is long-term or permanent, and/or documentation from your home university. We ask that you get in touch with the relevant accessibility officer at Lund University when you apply for a programme/course (see contact details on this page). In that way, we can provide you with the best and most complete information possible and prepare the support you need.

If you intend to come to Lund University on an exchange programme, you and your coordinator at your home university need to contact us when you apply for exchange.

If you intend to come to Lund as a degree student or freemover, we do not need to have any contact with your previous university. You should contact us yourself to let us know that you are planning to study at Lund University. We ask you to apply for learning support when you apply to Lund University.

Visual or hearing impairment?

If you have a visual or hearing impairment, you need to contact Disability Support Services in good time for any support to be in place at the start of the semester. If possible, reach out to us already when you apply for studies at the University.

If you require sign language interpretation because of your hearing impairment, please note that it is difficult for us to find qualified education interpreters. Only a very limited number of interpreters in Sweden are able to interpret different sign languages.

Available forms of learning support

Disability Support Services offer several different forms of support for students who have long-term disabilities. Together with your accessibility officer at Disability Support Services, you will determine which form of support best suits your study needs.

Receiving note-taking support means that a fellow student on the course shares their notes with you after each lecture.

Access to note-taking support requires a decision from your accessibility officer. You can ask a fellow student who you think takes good notes, but you can also get help from Disability Support Services to find someone. Fees for note-taking support are paid by the Disability Support Services.

If you would prefer to try to take notes yourself, you can borrow a SmartPen. This also requires a decision from your coordinator. An Echo SmartPen is a special pen used to make notes while recording the lecture at the same time. With the help of a few notes on a special notepad, it is easy to jump around within the sound file to listen to different parts of the lecture. You can then choose to add to your notes or just listen to what was said at a specific point.

The education officer at Disability Support Services can help you address problems with study techniques. By mapping your study technique, you will determine the shortcomings in your approach to studying and – most important of all – what you can do about them.

Sometimes you can get stuck in your studies. You procrastinate until it's too late and your study results perhaps fall short of your expectations. In that case, a mentor could be helpful.

A mentor is a student with experience of studying successfully at university. The mentor can function as a sounding board and help you to plan and organise your studies.

You can discuss the writing process with staff at the Academic Support Centre and get support in structuring your work. When you need to write your degree project or other major assignments, you can get support at the various stages of the writing process.

If you often make reading errors, read slowly or have problems concentrating when you read, you may find it very helpful to listen to your required reading.

Many course textbooks are available as talking book recordings.

About recorded talking books in the Legimus database on the Lund University Libraries website

Your library provides you with a downloading account for Legimus, so that you can download the literature you need. You do not need a certificate to obtain a downloading account.

There is a specialist librarian available at every library to assist you.

Your contact librarian can order any literature that has not already been recorded as a talking book. Remember that it can take two to three months to produce a talking book.

TorTalk speech synthesis

You can use TorTalk speech synthesis software to listen to all digital texts, such as

  • webpages
  • e-books
  • articles in full text
  • Word documents and
  • scanned documents.

TorTalk is available on many of the University’s computers and you can install the program on your own computer.

If you have a disability, your exams may be adapted as needed. Perhaps you need additional time for written exams or to sit in a smaller group to be able to concentrate better?

Requests for special arrangements for exams are always subject to approval. Your examiner has the last word on whether to grant the request. Sometimes, the student’s wishes are incompatible with the learning outcomes of the course and can therefore not be granted.

If you have recommendations on support during examinations, you must notify the study advisor at the department. This notification is to be made no later than two to three weeks before the exam in question. You discuss alternative examination forms with the study advisor or the teacher.

How to apply for learning support

Once you have been admitted, you can apply for learning support via NAIS (National Administration and Information System for Coordinators). To do this, log in to the NAIS system via the link below and complete your application in the online form. With your application, you are to upload:

  • a certificate confirming that you have a long-term disability and describing your study situation, or
  • a document from your former university stating that you have received learning support.

The certificate must be issued by an external expert, for example, a doctor, psychologist, speech therapist or equivalent.

Apply for learning support via the NAIS website

You are always welcome to book an appointment with an accessibility officer if you have questions about your application. The contact details are on this page.

What happens once I have applied?

When Disability Support Services receives your application via NAIS, the staff will contact you to set up an individual meeting. After a discussion with an accessibility officer, you will receive a notification about support specifying the decision and recommendations. You will need to show this to be granted adaptations to teaching and assessment.

Housing, personal assistance and transport

Unfortunately, we are not able to help you find adapted accommodation. If you have special accommodation requirements, please contact AF Bostäder. They manage a small number of adapted residences for people with disabilities in Lund.

More about adapted accommodation on the AF Bostäder website

The University cannot offer help with arranging personal assistance either. This also applies to the time you will spend on campus. In order to receive personal assistance from the municipality, you must have a Swedish personal identity number. You can apply for this number with the Swedish Tax Agency ('Skatteverket') if your studies will last longer than 12 months.

For more information about personal assistance, please contact the City of Lund and ask about 'LSS' ('The Swedish Act concerning Support and Service for Persons with Certain Functional Impairments').

In order to gain access to transport services to and from campus, and in your free time, a Swedish personal identity number is also a requirement. For more information, please contact the City of Lund and ask about 'community transport' ('färdtjänst').
