In this course, you will formulate and work on a research question in historical osteology. You will choose a topic together with a supervisor and use relevant methods and theories to answer your question. To pass, you need to demonstrate that you have a good overview of the subject, in-depth knowledge in your chosen area and an understanding of current research.
You will practise collecting and analysing material, using both qualitative and quantitative methods, and thinking critically about complex issues. You show your ability to make assessments based on scientific, social and ethical perspectives, and demonstrate that you can take responsibility for your own knowledge development.

Course literature ARKM36 (PDF, New tab)The course consists mainly of independent work, supported by supervision and seminars. You will receive up to 20 hours of supervision and participate in 5–7 compulsory seminars. To pass, you must attend at least 80% of the seminars.
The examination is based on both the master’s thesis and your presentation of it at a seminar. There, you will also act as an opponent for another student's work.
The course can form part of a Master's degree, either within the Master's programme in Archaeology and Ancient History – Theory and Practice or a stand-alone Master's degree in archaeology, historical archaeology, historical osteology, or ancient history.
After graduation, you will be well prepared for work in contract archaeology, research, cultural heritage, museums and other public or private organisations that deal with archaeological and historical knowledge. The programme also provides a solid foundation for further studies at the doctoral level.
Prerequisites
Admission to the course requires HOSK04 (Historical Osteology: Bachelor's course, 30 credits), 30 credits in Archaeology and Ancient History at advanced level, and English 6, or equivalent knowledge.
