In this course, you explore how people lived in Scandinavia between the 8th and 12th centuries. Through studying both objects and written sources from the period, you learn what society looked like. You follow the shift from pagan beliefs to Christianity, discover how Viking burials reflect people's values, and examine how gender and social roles shaped everyday life. You also look into trade, plundering, and the rise of new economies, as well as how rural and urban landscapes developed.

Course literature SASH02 (PDF, New tab)The course is taught in English at the Department of Archaeology and Ancient History. You will learn through different types of teaching: lectures, seminars, group work, and one study visit.
To pass the course, you need to take part actively in the seminars and group exercises. You also need to complete a written assignment. Exchange students are given priority when applying.

Selection criteria
Seats are allocated according to the following: The general average (GPA) of your higher secondary school leaving certificate: 34 %, The Swedish national university aptitude test: 34 %, number of previous ECTS at application deadline (up to 165): 32 %. If students have equal credentials, seats are allocated based on their results on The Swedish National University Aptitude Test. If this too is equal, seats are allocated based on a draw.

are required to pay tuition fees. You pay an instalment of the tuition fee in advance of each
semester.
