Why did you choose this Master's programme in Synthetic & Analytical Chemistry at Lund University?
Choosing the Master’s programme in Synthetic and Analytical Chemistry at Lund University was a decision shaped by both curiosity and determination. From my bachelor’s studies, I knew that organic chemistry was the field I felt most passionate about, and this programme seemed to offer exactly the specialisation I was eager to pursue. I was also thrilled by the opportunity to study abroad, and the idea of immersing myself in a vibrant student city like Lund felt just right.
What do you think about the programme so far, and what has been the most rewarding part of it?
I like the programme, and I really appreciate the way the courses and semesters are structured. Being able to focus on one course at a time, rather than deal with several in parallel and then face a tightly packed exam week at the end of the semester, allows me to immerse myself more deeply in each subject and enhances my learning. This is probably the most significant difference compared to my previous studies in Germany and France, and I’m glad to have experienced these different teaching styles, especially the one here in Lund.
More than anything, I feel that I’ve learned a lot during the past year studying in Lund. The advanced courses have given me a strong foundation in chemistry, which I’ve been able to apply in the extensive practical lab courses and now in my ongoing degree project. Not to mention the excellent teachers, the new friendships with people from many different parts of the world, and the welcoming study atmosphere. It’s a great feeling to receive support from all sides at Lund University.
What is your favourite course and why?
I’m very happy that I chose both the Coordination chemistry and organometallic chemistry course as well as the Medicinal chemistry course. Each course taught me new ways of thinking and new approaches to solving chemical problems. I appreciate how both courses connect to organic chemistry while also expanding that knowledge into other areas. In my opinion, this interdisciplinary overlap is what makes them particularly exciting. They are well structured and taught by highly enthusiastic teachers.
Have you had the opportunity to gain any practical experience during your studies?
Most of the courses I took included well-structured practical laboratory sessions that complemented the lectures and helped reinforce the theoretical concepts. In addition, I chose to undertake a 60-credit master’s degree project over a full academic year, which has helped me to further develop and practice my laboratory skills as well as my chemical problem-solving abilities.
How international is your programme? (in terms of nationalities represented)?
In my view, the environment is very international. It feels like a perfect blend of Swedish students alongside both European and non-European students, which is definitely part of what makes Lund University such a nice and special place.
To what extent do you feel the programme prepares you for a career in your field?
By pursuing a master’s degree in chemistry at Lund University, I feel that I am gaining the knowledge and skills needed to build a career in the field. The environment at Lund University is very supportive when it comes to building and expanding your professional network, with many people willing to help - whether you plan to pursue an academic career or a professional path in industry.
What are your career goals after your graduation?
After completing my master’s degree, I would like to gain further practical experience, either in industry or as an academic researcher. In the longer term, my goal is to pursue a PhD in organic chemistry.
What was your first impression of Lund?
Lund truly is a charming, dynamic, and very special place. I still remember moving here in August and enjoying the long summer days around the city and in the surrounding countryside. Lund has so much to offer, with plenty to explore both geographically and culturally, as well as in many other ways.
What is it like being an international student at Lund University?
Simply put, people here make me feel very welcome, and I am glad to be an international student. As mentioned earlier, there is always plenty of support available, with people ready to help whenever you need it. Not knowing any Swedish at all is by no means a limitation; however, I would still recommend starting to learn the language of the country you move to, it is fun.
Do you have any advice for other students that are considering coming to Lund?
Lund has become a very special place for me. Although moving to a new country can feel intimidating, Lund and everyone working at the university made it easy to settle in by providing guidance and a very welcoming environment. Coming to Lund offers countless opportunities to build meaningful friendships and connections, while also having fun and learning a great deal about both yourself and your subject.
What would you say to someone considering applying to the same programme, and why should prospective students choose it?
What initially convinced me to choose the programme – and what I still appreciate now as I am writing my degree project – is its flexibility and the freedom to decide which courses to take. At Lund University, you can choose whether to focus more on coursework and building your theoretical knowledge, or whether you prefer to spend more time on a practical project or your degree project; the choice is entirely yours.
As a highly international programme, it also offers a unique opportunity to exchange knowledge and learn alongside students from all over the world and from many different backgrounds. I have found my classmates and the atmosphere within the department to be very cooperative.
From my own experience, I feel that the programme has broadened my chemical knowledge and provided me with the support, infrastructure, and opportunities needed to further develop my laboratory skills. I particularly appreciate the strong emphasis on practical coursework, as nothing reinforces learning better than applying theory in practice.
The programme structure also allows you to focus on one course at a time, avoiding overlapping lectures and lab sessions. Thanks to this programme, I have learned a great deal and feel well prepared to confidently continue my higher education.
