Why did you choose Lund University?
"One of my dreams ever since I was little was to live in Europe for a few years. When I decided it was time to leave my job and work towards my Master’s, I researched universities in Europe that offered the programme I wanted. Out of all the universities I applied and got accepted to, Lund just spoke to me – it felt like home, and I was very excited for a new adventure."
What do you think of your programme so far? Does it meet your expectations?
"It has been very different from what I am used to, but it has exceeded my expectations. The courses are exactly what I need for my dream job, and professors have been incredibly understanding and knowledgeable. I am also very excited about the courses that I still have to take. There’s one where we apply everything that we have learned in the Master’s to create a Master's project. It will be a great way to put everything into practice before getting back to the workforce."
What is the best thing about your programme?
"The best thing about my programme is the diversity in the curriculum. They teach us about production, quality, product development, microbiology, nutrition. There are also electives like packaging logistics, probiotics, sustainable processes. This let the students tailor their studies to their dream jobs."
What do you think of the teaching style in Sweden?
"The teaching style in Sweden is quite different from what I’ve experienced before. There’s a strong work-life balance for both students and professors, and while teachers are always eager to help, students are expected to take responsibility for their own learning. Lectures are fewer, but independent study, research, and preparation are key. What I really enjoy is the focus on critical thinking and problem-solving, with many courses incorporating industry collaborations, company visits, and guest lectures to connect academics with real-world challenges."
How international is your programme?
"My programme is highly international and fully taught in English. The Master's students from around the world are mixed with Swedish students specialising in food science, creating a diverse learning environment. Once you're in the courses, you'll notice that your classmates aren’t just from your programme but from other Master's programmes, as well as people from all over the world."
Have you been able to gain any practical experience during your studies?
"Yes, I have. A lot of the projects we do in the courses focus on real-world applications. Also, for our last semester before the thesis, we have a course where we apply everything that we have learned to real problems faced by companies. We even present our results to those companies."
Why should prospective students choose this programme?
"Students should choose this programme because it gives them the opportunity to tailor their studies to their dream job. This programme also has great connections in the industry and provides a lot of hands-on experience which can be very beneficial when applying for jobs."
What is it like being an international student at Lund University?
"It has been incredible. I have felt welcomed in every place I have been. Even during the introduction period, I have never seen a university put so much effort into welcoming incoming students. They understand what it is like to move so far from home and try to make the transition as comfortable as possible."
What do you do in your spare time?
"I like to be busy so I do a lot of stuff. I like to learn new things (at this moment, I am learning Swedish and play the ukelele). I love dancing and I take courses here in Lund. I also love traveling with friends and had the opportunity to do that. It is very easy to travel here."
What have been the highlights of your first year in Lund?
"There have been so many highlights! I have met so many amazing people, I have grown so much not only professionally, but personally. My travels and all of the activities that are offered here in Lund University. There are so many opportunities to meet people and try something new – between the nations and the guilds from the Faculty of Engineering (LTH), you will always have something fun to do."
Do you have any advice for students that are considering coming to Lund?
"Take the leap and embrace everything Lund has to offer! Moving to a new country, especially one that feels far from home, can be daunting at first, but I promise you won’t regret it. In just a few months, this town has exceeded all my expectations and given me unforgettable experiences, amazing friendships, and memories that will last a lifetime."
