What made you choose this Master's programme and the Synthetic and Analytical Chemistry specialisation at Lund University?
My interest in chemistry began in secondary school, and during my upper secondary studies I took a course on human and drug development, part of which dealt with medicinal chemistry. That sparked my interest, and I realised what I wanted to study and work with in the future.
During my bachelor's programme here in Lund, I became particularly interested in organic chemistry – both the theoretical part, but above all the practical part with laboratory work. When I compared similar master's programmes at other universities, I felt that the master's programme in Lund offers both broad and in-depth knowledge. The programme prepares students for work in industry, while also opening up opportunities to continue in academia in a research group.
What do you think of the programme so far?
I feel very pleased. The courses feel relevant and clearly linked to real-world applications. It is also evident that the teaching is closely connected to research and that the lecturers are experts in their fields. I really appreciate the flexibility of the programme, where you can choose to do a degree project worth 30, 45 or 60 credits. This gave me the opportunity to go on an exchange semester during my master's degree.
What has been most rewarding about the programme?
The best thing for me has been how well the laboratory work ties in with the theory. You not only learn about different reactions and concepts in the lectures but also go into the lab and test them in practice, which has enabled me to learn an incredible amount.
What is your favourite course and why?
My favourite course has been medicinal chemistry, which I chose as part of my master's degree. The professor who teaches the course is very engaged and even invited guest lecturers from industry to share their knowledge and how they use their education in their working lives. For me, this gave me both new perspectives and motivation regarding what I can work with after graduation.
Have you had the opportunity to gain practical experience during your studies?
Yes, definitely. During my years in Lund, I have done many different laboratory experiments, which have given me a lot of confidence in the lab. During my last summer job, I realised how much experience I have actually gained through my education, and I was able to contribute new ideas to solve problems that arose in the lab.
To what extent do you think the programme prepares you for a career in your field?
Very well, I would say. You get to delve deeper into theory while learning different techniques, instruments and working methods that prepare you for roles in both academia and industry.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, many choose to continue in academia and apply for a doctoral position, but I would like to go into industry and work in R&D at a pharmaceutical company. That's why I'm going to do my degree project at a company in the spring.
What was your first impression of Lund?
My first impression of Lund was that it is a city full of students and a great student life where everyone is welcome – and that really turned out to be true.
What is the best thing about studying at Lund University?
I would say the absolute best thing is the student life and all the opportunities to get involved, something that really stands out compared to other universities. There is so much to do: student theatre, student nations, student unions and various committees, so there really is something for everyone.
I myself have been involved in student life as much as I can and have met many students from different programmes, but also many chemists, both current students and alumni. At the same time, you have professors who are experts and researchers in the fields you are studying, which enhances the education even more.
What would you say to someone considering applying to the same programme, and why should prospective students choose it?
Do it – apply for the programme! If you like chemistry and want to develop both theoretically and practically, this is a programme that offers both breadth and depth, while also challenging you.
You should choose this programme because it has close links to research, many practical elements, inspiring lecturers and great career opportunities in several different industries. In addition, Lund is a fantastic student city where you can get involved in student life alongside your studies and at the same time get close to research.
