This course in extragalactic astronomy provides you with a deep understanding of advanced topics in galaxy formation and evolution. You will study the interaction between stars and interstellar matter, the integrated light of galaxies, interactions between galaxies, and early galaxy formation. The course covers both theoretical and observational aspects of basic cosmology, the dynamic and thermodynamic evolution of the universe, as well as the diversity, origin, evolution, and structure of galaxies.

Through this course, you will have an opportunity to delve into how stars and interstellar matter interact, how the light of galaxies is created, and how galaxies influence each other. Discover the fascinating processes that shape our universe and learn to understand the complex interactions that occur on a cosmic scale.

The course is mandatory for a Master's degree in Astrophysics and optional for a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Physics.

The teaching is based on lectures, assignments and presentations of scientific papers. You will gain practical experience in performing calculations describing the evolution of the universe and the properties of galaxies.

The course includes compulsory elements such as assignments and presentations. Examination is by written exam at the end of the course. The course is given in English.

Access to the course requires knowledge equivalent to ASTC13, Astronomy: Galaxies and Cosmology, 7.5 credits or FYSN28, Physics: General Theory of Relativity, 7.5 credits. General entry requirements and English 6/B.
