This course explores how the Roman Empire interacted with cultures beyond its borders, with a special focus on the Germanic and Celtic peoples between 100 BCE and 400 CE. You will examine how these cultural encounters were expressed both in material objects and in ways of life. The course helps you understand and discuss key concepts such as imperialism, views of civilization, ethnicity, social identity, Romanization, and cultural hybridity.

The course is taught in English at the Department of Archaeology and Ancient History. You will learn through different types of teaching: lectures, seminars, group work, and study visits at The National Museum and Glyptoteket in Copenhagen.

To pass the course, you need to take part actively in the seminars and group exercises. You also need to complete a written assignment. Exchange students are given priority when applying.
