In this course, you will learn about magmatism from a global perspective. We explore how and where magmas form, how they evolve, and how they generate different types of rocks. The course is ideal for those who want to understand the Earth's structure and the processes that shape our planet.

The course consists of lectures, practical exercises such as microscopy and problem-solving sessions, as well as an international or regional excursion. You will learn how to use geochemical and isotope geological methods to study rock-forming processes and to determine the ages of minerals and rocks.

Course content:

  • Magmatism and plate tectonic environments
  • Formation and differentiation of magmas
  • Geochemical and isotope geological methods
  • Age determination of minerals and rocks
  • Practical exercises: microscopy, problem-solving
  • Excursion: international or regional.

Students are expected to contribute to the costs of the excursion, which will roughly correspond to travel expenses."

Prerequisites

A minimum of 90 ECTS credits in Geology or Earth Science, including courses corresponding to GEOB21 Geology: Evolution of Life and Earth's Climate, 15 credits, GEOB22 Geology: Mineralogy and Petrology, 15 credits, GEOB23 Geology: Sedimentology, Geomorphology and Structural Geology, 15 credits, Geology: From the Ice Age to the Present and Swedish Regional Geology, 15 credits, and GEOB25 Geology in Society, 15 credits.
