In this course, you will gain knowledge about sedimentary basins—areas where sediments have been deposited over millions of years, forming thick successions of rocks such as sandstone, shale, and limestone. Understanding these historical archives and their fossils is fundamental to interpreting the long-term development of Earth’s surface, both in marine and terrestrial environments, as well as the evolution of climate and life. Sedimentary basins also contain Earth’s major resources of gas, coal, and oil, along with significant groundwater reservoirs. You will learn how sedimentary basins form and are preserved, and why they are so important for both research and society.
Course content
The course covers the following topics:
• Marine and terrestrial depositional environments for sediments
• Formation and evolution of sedimentary basins
• Tectonic controls on sedimentary basins
• Facies analysis and sequence stratigraphic analysis
• Geochemical characterization of sedimentary rocks
• Geophysical logging methods in boreholes"
Teaching is conducted through lectures, field excursions, exercises, and seminars. You will learn about the environments where sediments accumulate and how movements in the Earth's crust (tectonics) influence these processes. We use various techniques such as facies analysis, sequence stratigraphic analysis, geochemical characterization, and geophysical methods to study sedimentary successions. The course includes regional (Skåne) and international (Denmark, Oman) excursions, where you will observe natural rock outcrops and apply your knowledge in practice.
Prerequisites
To be admitted to the course, students must have 90 credits in science studies, including 75 credits in geology. Proficiency in English corresponding to English B/English 6 from Swedish upper secondary school.
