In this course, you will explore genetic information and its molecular aspects. You will learn about DNA structure, genome organisation, and chromatin build-up, and understand how gene expression is regulated.
The course covers how DNA is maintained, organised during cell division, and changes during evolution. It is research-focused and provides insights into the latest advances in eukaryotic molecular genetics.
Key topics include chromatin structure, functional chromosomal elements, mobile DNA elements, developmental genetics, non-coding RNA, tumour genetics, and molecular genetics methods. Through practical lab sessions, you will gain hands-on experience with molecular biology techniques.
This is a full-time advanced course and will be quite intensive. To be well-prepared, we recommend reading the specified chapters in the course book on basic genetics before the course starts. Guided by lectures introducing the topics, you will study the textbook chapters and other selected materials.
You will participate in group studies on gene regulation, practise oral presentations, conduct experimental lab work, write lab reports, and attend literature seminars on research articles.
A mandatory written exam on fundamental genetics knowledge is held at the beginning of the course. Group studies and practical work include oral examinations. The course concludes with a final written exam.
Prerequisites
For admission to the course, English 6 and 120 credits of scientific studies including knowledge corresponding to BIOA10 Cell Biology and Microbiology 15 credits, BIOA11 Genetics and Evolution 15 credits, MOBA03 Molecular Biology 15 credits, and Chemistry 30 credits including biochemistry, are required.
