Explore stem cell biology and regenerative medicine with a focus on Lund University’s leading research areas. You will start by learning about cell plasticity, reprogramming, and how regeneration works. Then, you will study stem cells from different perspectives, including their niches and organs. The course also addresses complications linked to dysfunctional stem cells in therapies and tissue engineering, and examines the legal and ethical issues surrounding this research. Its purpose is to prepare you for work in fields involving stem cells and regenerative medicine by introducing ongoing research.
The course is organised into five week-long modules on topics related to stem cells and regenerative medicine. Most learning activities are interactive, so you will need to prepare before classes and take part in discussions. Each module includes lectures by experienced researchers, practical exercises, and ends with an assessed assignment. You will practise analysing research articles, presenting your findings, and writing in a scientific style. Participation is mandatory for all practical and group activities.
Prerequisites
To be admitted to the course, students must have at least 120 first or second-cycle credits in science subjects, including at least 15 credits in cell biology, 15 credits in biochemistry, 15 credits in pathobiology/pharmacology/toxicology/molecular medicine, 7.5 credits in physiology and 5 credits in stem cell biology or developmental biology.
