In this course you will learn how the EU has developed from an international agreement into an autonomous legal order. It starts with describing the EU constitutional structure and institutions, with focus on the role of the European Court of Justice. You will explore key principles such as direct effect and the primacy of EU law are elaborated on in detail.
Throughout the course there is a strong emphasis on the internal market and the four freedoms that are central to European integration. Coupled to this, you will learn about issues of current relevance in the EU, such as climate policy and the EU’s external competences when acting on the global stage. There are also segments on competition law and international trade law. Finally, you will discuss emerging challenges including the pursuit of strategic autonomy from a legal point of view.
The course mixes lectures and seminars and is highly interactive. You are encouraged to come prepared and actively contribute with questions and analysis in all teaching moments.
There is a strong focus on learning to read and understand case law from the Court of Justice and several seminars are designed to assist you in acquiring the relevant experience in this regard. Group work and presentations offer you the possibility to develop practical skills in working with legal material and prepare solid analysis and lines of argumentation.
The aim of the course is to give you a solid basis in EU law and to provide tools to understand the EU as a legal entity, as well as to open the door to legal methodology and analysis.
After completing the course you will have a thorough understanding of EU legislation and case law, as well as the foundational rights enjoyed by all EU citizens.

General and courses corresponding to the following Swedish Upper Secondary School Programs: English 6, Mathematics 3b/3c and Social Studies 1b/1a1+1a2.
