The degree project provides you with significantly deepened and complementary knowledge in a subject-specific sub-area. You will receive training in advanced chemical research methodology and learn to independently manage and conduct a limited research project.
The degree project marks the end of your master's programme and is required to apply for your degree.
The course is offered both as part of a programme and as a standalone course.
The course is conducted as a project that you plan together with a supervisor experienced in the subject you have chosen for your thesis.
Assessment consists of a scientific report, a scientific abstract, a popular science summary, and an oral presentation of the thesis.
Degree project focus and structure
You are responsible for contacting a research group or similar to find a project and a supervisor. Together with your supervisor, you will determine the focus and structure of the work. The project can be carried out in a division within the department of chemistry, at another academic department, or outside the university, in agreement with the examiner.
The degree project can focus on one of the branches of chemistry: organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biophysics, analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, theoretical chemistry, or chemical physics.
You will conduct literature studies to understand the background of your project and perform laboratory work and/or theoretical tasks. You will carry out the project with a high degree of independence, which involves collecting data, documenting continuously, and compiling, analysing, and evaluating the results.
You will write a scientific report that includes a scientific abstract and a popular science description in Swedish or English. The thesis is presented orally at a public seminar.
