This course provides insight into how physics is used to study biological systems. You will learn about the structure of cells and the forces that govern their functions, including chemical and entropic forces. The course also covers how molecules move through random motion and diffusion, as well as how large biological molecules, known as macromolecules, are influenced by these processes.
You will also explore the molecular mechanisms and machines that drive biological systems. By combining theoretical understanding with practical examples, you will develop a broad knowledge of the role of physics in biology.
The course combines theory with applied examples to provide a deeper understanding of the role of physics in biology. Through lectures and exercises, you will analyse biological systems from a physical perspective and learn how different forces and mechanisms interact.
You will work with concepts such as diffusion and random motion to understand how molecules move within cells, and study macromolecules and the physical principles that determine their functions. The course encourages critical thinking and problem-solving, equipping you with the tools to independently analyse biological systems using physical models.
Entry requirements
Admission to the course requires English 6/B and 90 credits of science studies, including knowledge equivalent to BERN01 Modelling in Computational Science, 7.5 credits or FYSB23 Basic Statistical Physics and Quantum Statistics, 7.5 credits.

Seats are allocated according to: ECTS (HPAV): 100 %.
